World Building

The World view is your reference library for everything that makes up the setting of your story: the places, groups, objects, and ideas your characters move through.

World elements

Each world element has:

  • Name: what the element is called.
  • Type: the kind of element. Built-in types are location, faction, item, and concept, and you can enter your own custom type.
  • Summary: a short one-line description for quick scanning.
  • Aliases: alternative names the element is known by.
  • Tags: free-form labels you can use to group and filter related elements (e.g. northern-kingdoms, magic, chapter-1).
  • World-building prose: a full rich-text area for detailed notes, edited like the main editor.

Nested world elements

World elements can be nested to reflect real structure: a city inside a region, a division inside a faction, an artifact within a collection. This lets you build a browsable hierarchy of your world rather than a flat list.

Integration with other features

  • Spell check & Glossary: every world element name is automatically added to your project's Glossary and to the spell-check dictionary, so invented place and faction names aren't flagged as errors. See Glossary for how the auto-sync works.

How world elements are stored

All world metadata lives in one file, with each element's long-form notes in its own Markdown file:

world/
world.yaml # names, types, tags, aliases, nesting
  <element-id>.md # world-building prose
