Plots

The Plots view helps you track the threads running through your story (the main arc, the subplots, and the smaller beats), so you can see what each one is about, who's involved, and how it pays off.

What a plot holds

  • Name: the name of the plot thread.
  • Category: how central the thread is. Built-in categories are main, secondary, and minor, and you can also enter your own custom category label.
  • Characters: the characters involved in this thread, referenced directly from your cast.
  • Description: a rich-text area describing the thread: its premise, stakes, and progression.
  • Resolution: a dedicated space for how the thread resolves, so you always know where each arc is headed.

Why track plots separately

Keeping plots as first-class records, apart from your outline, lets you reason about your story by thread rather than by chapter. You can check that every subplot has a resolution, see which characters are carrying which arcs, and spot threads that have gone quiet.

How plots are stored

Plot metadata lives in one file, with each plot's prose (description and resolution) in its own Markdown file:

plots/
plots.yaml # names, categories, involved characters
<plot-id>.md # description and resolution prose
