Backup & Restore

Backup & Restore bundles your projects and optionally your app settings into a single archive file you can store safely or carry to another computer.

Because Writers Notebook already stores everything as plain files, a backup is simply a portable, self-contained copy of that data in one place.

Creating a backup

From the Backup view you can:

  1. Choose which projects to include (one, several, or all).
  2. Decide whether to include your app settings alongside the project data.
  3. Choose where to save the archive.

The result is a single archive file. A manifest inside it records what's contained including the projects, and per-project stats such as word counts so a backup can be inspected before it's restored.

Inspecting a backup

Before restoring, Writers Notebook can read a backup's manifest and show you what's inside (which projects it holds and their statistics), so you always know what you're about to bring back.

Restoring a backup

When restoring you can:

  • Pick which projects from the archive to restore (you don't have to restore all of them).
  • Choose whether to restore the app settings that were saved with it.

Restored projects are written into your current data directory and registered so they appear in the project switcher.

Common uses

  • Safety net: keep periodic archives in case of accidental deletion or disk failure.
  • Move to a new machine: back up on one computer, restore on another.
  • Share a project: hand someone a single file containing exactly the projects you choose.
  • To produce a reader-facing document (EPUB, PDF, etc.) rather than an archive, see Publishing & Export.
